Canine leishmaniasis is a disease produced by a blood parasite and transmitted by a mosquito. It is considered a multisystemic disease with the possibility of affecting a great number of organs such as skin, eyes, kidneys, intestines, liver, joints, etc. causing a wide range of symptoms.
In our area the prevalence of this disease is very high.
Prevention is of extreme importance. Products applied on the dog that act as repellents for mosquitoes, not leaving the dog outside during the hours of high activity of the mosquito, and annual blood tests are all recommended. The blood test should be done between December and January of each year since the mosquito season goes from March until October. Changes in the blood parameters are observed before the clinical signs set in. The sooner we make the diagnosis, the better the prognosis.
