Looking after the senior pet. We have adopted a methodical approach (protocol) for the continued welfare of the aging pet (Geriatric Health Maintenance Program) designed for the prevention and treatment of major conditions affecting the aging animal: heart disease, renal insufficiency, degenerating eyesight, malnutrition, cancer, and a long list of etceteras. The protocol: Most pets are considered “old” or having reached the golden age when they fall into one of the following categories: | Small breeds (less than 10 kgs) | 10 – 12 years | | Medium breeds (10 to 25 kgs) | 9 – 10 years | | Large breeds (25 to 50 kgs) | 8 – 10 years | | Giant breeds (over 50 kgs) | 6 – 9 years |
It is important to consider factors such as lifestyle, nutrition, exercise and disease history all of which can bring forward or delay aging. Factors we assess when following a geriatric diagnostic protocol are: age, breed, weight, exercise level, nutrition, disease history, skin care. Physically we conduct the normal check-up exam and complete this if warranted with: - Comprehensive blood tests and urinalysis
- Blood pressure control
- Radiography
- Cardiac and abdominal echography
Any pet over the age of 7 should be submitted to annual check ups after which we will recommend optimum programs for exercise, medication and diet, all of which contribute to health and quality of life.
