Blood Pressure Measurement
|
|
The availability today of oscilometric means of measuring blood pressure in dogs and cats (cuffs adapted to their legs and tails) as in human beings allows us to routinely measure blood pressure of patients coming to our clinic. Why is blood pressure measurement so important? Maintenance of adequate blood pressure ensures correct flow of blood from the arteries to the fine capillary beds irrigating our vital organs (heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, etc.) thus providing these with nutrients, oxygen and removal of waste products. Undetected changes in blood pressure can adversely affect the function of vital organs; contribute to progression of disease and adversely affect, among others: central nervous system, heart, kidneys, eyes, etc. Treatment: Many efficient drugs are available for tailoring treatment to each individual case of either high or low blood pressure.
